I read somewhere that Tamna the Island is based on a manhwa that was inspired by the story of Hendrick Hamel, who was shipwrecked on Jeju Island in 1653. I found some sites that offered information on Hamel for those who are interested.

Park Kyu aka Exiler mentions another foreigner living in Han Yang in Episode 6. He is talking about Jan Jansz. Weltevree. If you watched the Return of Iljimae, you should be familiar with him as the guy who helped in firearms production in episode 20.
Weltervree was employed in firearms production and fought for Korea during the Manchu Invasion of 1636. He fully integrated into Korean life by taking on the name of Park Yun; he married a Joseon woman and had two children with her.
