Queen Consort Hun Ae (헌애왕후; 獻哀王后) [964-1029]
獻 (Hun for giving, offering) 哀 (Ae for to grieve, to feel sorry for)
Also known as: Empress Chun Chu (천추태후; 千秋太后)
千 (Chun for thousand) 秋 (Chu for fall, time, years)
She was a granddaughter of the first monarch of Goryeo, Emperor Taejo. She became the third wife of Goryeo's 5th monarch Gyeongjong, who was also her cousin. Her younger sister also married Gyeongjong and became Queen Consort Hun Jung.
When Gyeongjong passed away in 981, their son Wang Song (王訟) was only a year old. As a son-in-law of the 4th monarch Gwangjong, her brother Wang Chi (王治) became the 6th monarch Seongjong.
After her husband's death, Queen Consort Hun Ae resided in the Soongdeok Palace
(숭덕궁; 崇德宮) as a goongju (궁주; 宮主), a title that literally means palace owner. During her years in the Soongdeok Palace, she shared affections with Kim Chi Yang (金致陽), her maternal cousin. When Seongjong found out, he had Kim Chi Yang flogged and sent into exile.
In 997, Seongjong died and Wang Song ascended the throne to become Mokjong. Queen Consort Hun Ae moved into Chun Chu Palace and became known as Empress Chun Chu. She served as regent for her son. She brought back Kim Chi Yang and gave him titles such as Woobokya (우복야; 右僕射) and Samsasa (삼사사; 三司事).
In 1003, Empress Chun Chu and Kim Chi Yang had a son. They wanted their son to ascend the throne after Mokjong.
