SEGMENTER NOTES

Note: This guideline is true for almost all hardsubbed videos!

For almost all hardsubbed videos, it is always best to segment according to voice and hardsub, but when that is not possible, then segment by the hardsubs. The segment should start with the voice and then just follow how long the hardsubs stays on the screen...usually segments is best by every line of hardsub or it can be up to 2 lines because the dialogue is too fast.

Usually the Chinese hardsubs are timed perfectly in the video with almost all no voice segments eliminated by prolonging of the Chinese hardsubs, so all segmenters need to do is segment by following the timing of the hardsubs. If segmenters segment following only the voice, the timing for the segments of the hardsubs will be off, which is really not good for the viewers. So please tell all segmenters this guideline for hardsubbed videos.

I am telling you this because when I was subbing and editing, many segmenters are segmenting according to voice only, and their segments are perfect for voice segments. But it was not good because there is still time remaining on the video screen where the Chinese hardsubs are still showing, but no English subs to match it because the voice segmenters cut no voice segments when there are no voice. Usually, because of the prolonged Chinese hardsubs, many no voice segments are not needed. Only case when no voice segments need to be cut is when the actors are not talking for a long time. I hope you can understand what I mean here. Just ask me if you have any questions. THANKS!!!

  1. Segmenters & Subbers: During prolong no voice segments, please add:

    • Subtitles ~ Team Summer's Desire ~ ViiKii.Net
    • Please do not exceed more than 5 of those in a 1 part video and DO NOT add it when it will really distract from the video!!!
  2. And if you sub even one line of translations, please read Translation Notes below.

Segmenters: If you are interested in learning autosegmenting, please read these 2 topics to help you. And if you need help with questions...I guess I can direct you to some autosegmenters who can help you.

What is automatized segmenting?
It is a method that enables you to segment any video with hardsubbed subtitle without having to spend more than 10 minutes in front of your computer.
The principe is to let a software detect the hardsubbed subtitles, record the time of apparition and disparition and create a softsub from it. Then from this softsub, create a segment file that you can upload to viikii. ~ Pom45i

Great Channel to learn Chinese and any languages you want!

If you are proficient in any languages, please contribute to our language Basic 1. Thank You!!!

Great site to assist you in subbing and learning Chinese: http://usa.mdbg.net/

(be careful of difficult sentences & certain pinyin as this site is not perfect)

It is great with translations, correct Chinese character writing, and pronunciations too.

  1. For each sentence PLEASE use appropriate punctuation marks such as .,!?
  2. Please do use CAPS for names, titles and beginning of each new sentences.
  3. When the sentence ends. Please use one space and then start the next sentence.
    • Example: I love you. I hate you.
  4. If the sentence fades please use 3 periods ... with no spaces. But if the sentence ends after 3 periods, please do use 1 space.
    • Example: I love you...but I... Forget it!
  5. If sentence is the character's thoughts, please use parenthese ( )
    • Example: I love you...but I... Forget it! (I am so not going to say it.)
  6. Use of for song lyrics. Example
"I Remember I Once Loved" by Peter Ho
  7. Use of
    • Do use
before the start of each sentence if subs are too high or too low, basically use your best judgment in using
to provide the best visual settings for all watchers.
itself can also be used to fill up an empty segment. DO NOT use a period "." to fill up a segment, use
      or do #8.
    • PLEASE PLEASE do not put
if positioning of English subs block any of the hardsubs. I (and many language learners) need to see the hardsubs so I can learn and improve my language skills. When I QC, I will remove
if they are not needed. I hope that is ok with everyone?

    • is used in the middle of a long sentence to break it up because it is just too long to fit on the screen. It depends on the subs & video length & pace, but it usually means you need to adjust the timing to prolong subs. If the following dialogue after the long sentene is too fast, it might not be good to use it.

    • used at the end of a sentence actually stop the subs from staying on screen til the next sub comes up. It is really better NOT to use it. The only way you would use
in the end of a sentence is to time the next seg/sub perfectly, but then you need to be a perfect timer. I haven't learn how to do that yet. Let me know if anyone discover this perfect timing method.
  8. Do adjust timing if subs requires it.
    • Example: Long sentences; if there is enough time between the next sentence, please prolong the timing by holding down CTRL key and press DOWN ARROW key repeatedly until correct time is reached. Press CTRL & UP ARROW key to shorten the segment.
  9. To delete a sub that is not needed. Click on the "!" triangle and click on the trash can/delete button and then just click save.
  10. To leave a subber a comment in the subbed pop up box, click on the number next to the subber's name and you can click on "+" sign of the subber you want to leave the comment for.
  11. Segmenters & Subbers:~ During prolong no voice segments, please add:
    • Subtitles ~ Team Summer's Desire ~ ViiKii.Net
    • Please do not exceed more than 5 of those in a 1 part video and DO NOT add it when it will really distract from the video!!!

NEW UPDATE!!! ~ Posted by Blanc ~ July 5

There should only be two cases where three periods should be use:
1) When the Chinese hardsubs have it.
2) When the current sentence is not able to finish before a new one starts. For example, when the speaker trailed off
A: "I..." Pause "I'm sorry."
Or when the sentence is interrupted and wasn't able to finish
A: "I..."
B: "Stop! Don't say it!"
If the sentence is complete then there should not be three periods but just one, put at the end. Do not use ... when there's just a pause between the segments. Just leave the first segment blank or put a comma, if appropriate. For example:
A: "I just"
Pause
A: "don't see the point."

This is so it can match with the Chinese subs and provide accuracy for our viewers.
