As the story opens, Margaret Hale is staying with her aunt Shaw in London, where she attends her cousin's wedding. She attracts potential suitors. Her privileged lifestyle is shattered when her father decides to move to the a grim industrial town. The family is exposed to a severe cultural shock, Margaret takes instant offense at the town. Life is difficult. Margaret learns about particular student and their lives seem set to be intertwined.
