Before Gangnam became the epicenter of wealth and prestige, it was still a rough neighborhood during the late 1970s. Hyun Soo (Kwon Sang Woo) transfers to Jung Moon High School in Gangnam in the spring of 1978 because his mother sees the potential of the area to redevelop. But the school is notorious for teachers who use severe corporal punishment and school gangs that wage constant power struggles. Hyun Soo gets off to a rocky start by getting hit with an aluminum bat for violating the school dress code, and he is immediately targeted by Jong Hoon (Lee Jong Hyuk), the school bully. Hyun Soo starts training in his idol Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do martial arts to try to defend himself. But Hyun Soo eventually befriends Woo Sik (Lee Jung Jin), the school kingpin, and discovers that they are both big Bruce Lee fans. But when they both fall in love with the beautiful Eun Joo (Han Ga In), and Eun Joo picks one over the other, their relationship becomes fractured. As Hyun Soo tries to win over Eun Joo’s love, can he also shine a spotlight on Korea’s broken educational system that fuels violence and excessive punishment? “Once Upon a Time in High School” is a 2004 South Korean film written and directed by Yoo Ha.
