Synopsis

Class status determined your entire life during the 16th-century Joseon Dynasty. So when aristocrat Hwang Jin Yi (Song Hye Kyo) learns the shocking secret that she is an illegitimate child, she is forced to give up her status and move down the social ranking to the lower class. With few options available to her, Jin Yi becomes a gisaeng (courtesan). But determined to lose her virginity on her own terms, she spends her first night with No Mi (Yoo Ji Tae), a family servant who has always loved her. Jin Yi goes on to become the most celebrated gisaeng of her time, known for her legendary beauty, intellect, and her unparalleled abilities in singing, dancing and poetry. Although beloved by all the noblemen, including the powerful government official Hee Yeol (Ryu Seung Ryong), Jin Yi leads a lonely existence and must choose her own road to happiness. “Hwang Jin Yi” is a 2007 South Korean film directed by Chang Yoon Hyun. It is based on the 2002 novel Hwangjini, which is about the life of the most famous courtesan in Korean history, written by Hong Seok Jung.
