Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet

A great Korean talent is curtailed at the prime of his life during the Japanese colonial rule. Yun Dong Ju (Kang Ha Neul) is a Korean poet who is studying literature in Japan in the early 20th century. But his life’s work is sidetracked when he and his cousin Song Mong Gyu (Park Jung Min) are detained by the Japanese government for participating in the Korean independence movement during World War II. Dong Ju is imprisoned, and there, he writes many patriotic poems about Korea during the last two years of his life. “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet” is a 2016 South Korean film directed by Lee Joon Ik. It is based on the real life of poet Yun Dong Ju, who lived from December 30, 1917, to February 16, 1945. Lee Joon Ik won the Grand Prize at the 2016 Baeksang Arts Awards and Park Jung Min took home the Best New Actor award for this film.
