About

Ahhh, to be young and at the top of your game. Yoon Seol Chan (Yong Joon Hyung of BEAST) is only a teen but has already “made it” as part of the top teen idol group called Men in Black. But his hot temperament always gets him into hot water, which his management agency has to constantly try to rectify and smooth over. When Seol Chan flies off the handle and causes yet another ruckus, his agency gets fed up and decides to teach him a lesson. They sideline him and force him to go back to a regular high school and live the life of a normal teenager. But not to be kept down, Seol Chan joins the high school music club and tries to rebuild his career. Can he regain his superstardom? “Monstar,” which is a combination of the words “monster” and “star,” is a 2013 South Korean drama series directed by Kim Won Seok, who also directed “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” (2010). It is the cable network Mnet’s first original scripted drama series.

I really wanted to love it. It had an awesome cast. Not because they were well know, but because they did an amazing job portraying their characters. Each person had faults but also redeeming qualities. It was refeshing to see a k-drama with more three dimensional characters. Typically you get this guy is bad and this guy is good. This drama showed that everyone has a past that motivates them to act the way they do, and that you can't assume that what you know is all there is to a person. That being said I was irritated with the ambiguous ending. I get that life isn't all nice and wrapped up in a bow, but I was frustrated at the lack of resolution to any of the problems or relationships. It felt like the writers had ADD and they ran out of time or got cancelled short notice. I didn't even realize I was watching the last episode until 10 minutes before it was over because there were so many loose ends. The first 9 episodes built up to a relationship between Se Yi and Sul Chan and then they never hashed things out. I think this probably irritated me more because there were so many full length song performances that just felt like filler, not that they weren't good, but I wish they would have used that time to progress the plot. Also they addressed Kyu Dong being bullied but never really addressed the abuse that Eun Ha was receiving at home. What's that about?! She didn't try to kill herself so let's sweep it under the rug? Seriously? If you just want to enjoy some stellar performances from young actors and listen to some kpop this is for you! However if you don't like unfinished story arcs avoid at all costs!
