If you like a good compelling and gripping story, don't look further. The story, setting and all the characters were well done. It's a mystery and through the whole show, I was always eager to find out what would happen next. Even though I guessed somethings before, the twist and revelation always got me by surprise. The characters were well written and not flat and their portrayal was surprisingly good. The cast mostly consists of young rookie actors, but you won't notice this at all. Each of them carried their role and made it believable. Especially Seo Ji Hoon, Jang Dong Yoon and Seo Young Joo made me feel for their characters. Also with the casting of Kim Hyun Soo who is also in real life still a student as the main lead made the whole drama more believable and I really appreciated not seeing 26+ actors playing the role of a high school student. While some people might complain about the dialogues which they thought were too adult like, I liked them. Why do we assume that children are not capable of being indepent and to fight for their rights? To me it only resonated with the sentiments I had as a teenager. All in all I really liked the drama and the length was great.

Despite the title the movie actually follows the path of two people, Yun Dongju and Song Monggyu, his cousin. This dual way of telling the story was well done and enriched the whole experience. On one hand, we can see Dongju, who just wanted to write poems and was faced with countless of obstacles and on the other hand is Monggyu, who wanted to fight against the Japanese occupation. The actors did a wonderful job portraying them and the choice of black and white gave the movie an interesting touch. I believe if the movie would have been in color it wouldn't have had the same strong impression. The director clearly saw a purpose in the black and white. He also incorporated Dongju's poems nicely into the story flow. Looking back on the characters I sometimes wished to know more about Dongju, the actual titular character. His story was so sad and it all seemed to be out of his control. Knowing how he is valued as a poet during the independence movements, I thought he would have been more active. But nonetheless his poems did speak to many people following the posthumous puplication. It was a sad, but great story to watch. A story about people lost in a chaotic time and how they fought for their dreams.

The story has a quite interesting premise and is able to pull it off. The time setting is nicely done and I can imagine, what life was back then. I thought the actor's depiction of their characters were great and matched. Everything felt very genuine and the message was bittersweet, but also with a positive outlook. What this miniseries tried to address is something I never really thought of, but now I'm definetly keeping it in mind, while watching other series. This is despite some shortcomings in the explanation of the supernatural happenings for sure a little gem I would recommend everyone.
