When you’re a star on the decline, appearing on a variety show can sometimes reboot your fame. Oh In Young (Kim Dasom) is a former member of a K-pop girl group who has seen her celebrity decline since the heyday of her music career. To reinvigorate her career and popularity, In Young agrees to star in a reality show that pairs up virtual mothers-in-law with daughters-in-law. In Young becomes the daughter-in-law to Yang Choon Ja (Go Doo Shim), the matriarch of a rural traditional clan. Cha Myeong Seok (Ryu Soo Young) becomes her fake husband and Cha Young Ah (Son Eun Seo) her sister-in-law. Kang Joon Soo (Ki Tae Young) is Young Ah’s husband but also happens to be the CEO of In Young’s entertainment agency. In Young’s new husband, Myeong Seok, is a handsome math professor who has never dated because of the stigma of being the “eldest son of an eldest son,” which scares away a lot of women because of the extra responsibilities that status carries within an extended family. In Young and Choon Ja share a contentious relationship onscreen as In Young is forced to wear traditional Korean dresses while cleaning out endless clay fermenting jars. But what happens when reality becomes blurred with reality TV? “The Eccentric Daughter-in-Law” is a 2015 South Korean drama series directed by Lee Duk Gun and Park Man Young.
