During the most tumultuous period of the Joseon Dynasty, a future king befriends two common orphans who remain lifelong confidantes. In this dramatized retelling of the life and times of King Jeongjo, who would go on to become the 22nd ruler of Joseon, Yi San tries to save his father, Crown Prince Sado, after he is locked in a rice storage chest by his grandfather, King Yeongjo (Lee Soon Jae). When Yi San’s childhood friends, Seong Song Yeon and Park Dae Su try to help him, the two orphans are kicked out of the palace. A decade later, Crown Prince Yi San (Lee Seo Jin) finds his long-lost friends, and he and Song Yeon (Han Ji Min) and Dae Su (Lee Jong Soo) become inseparable. Yi San goes on to become king and tries to change the old-fashioned ways of the court and install a more democratic rule. Song Yeon enters the court as a painting assistant and then becomes Yi San’s concubine and his only true love. Dae Su becomes a palace guard and eventually the king’s personal guard. Will the three friends be able to stay by each other’s side through all the palace threats and intrigue? “Yi San” is a 2007-2008 South Korean drama series directed by Lee Byung Hoon.
