Yamagata is known as the land of fruits and hot springs. In late autumn, Taiwanese favourites like apples and La France pears come into season. It is also the perfect season for fruit picking, hot springs, and a cruise down Mogami River. Top among the Taiwanese however is Yamagata’s countryside experience. Following the steady popularity of snow activities are farm-stays that support regional rejuvenation. Iide town especially has succeeded in drawing Taiwanese travellers in the recent years. While it's not an activity that can accommodate large numbers, many leave satisfied. In November 2012, these farm-stays came in top in the Japan/Korea category of a travel contest held in Taiwan. Our hosts set out to Iide to enjoy the rural scenery and the novelty of farm experience. They conclude their journey by visiting Yamadera and savouring seasonal dishes like imoni (stewed yam), tama konnyaku (konjac balls) and kinoko ryori (seasonal mushrooms).
