Shanghai is an international commercial city that has adopted Western culture since having been opened by Treaty of Nanjing in 1842 as we learned in the history class. Since it was first opened by Britain, it could not help but become a stranger as a British concession. Shanghai could not develop much like other cities in China until the reform and opening-up by Deng Xiaoping was implemented since China was reborn into a communist country in 1945. However, since the opening, the central government began investing intensively in Shanghai in the 1990s, dreaming of another Hong Kong of the Orient, and now it has become an international commercial city. Shanghai is a city that opens new eyes for those who have preconceived ideas about China. Skyscrapers are decorating the skyline of Shanghai by the city policy to encourage structures of various and unusual designs. Unevenly soaring modern skyscrapers just across Waitan and Huangpu River where the remnants of the concession remains create unique atmosphere as if to connect the past of Shanghai to the present of Shanghai through a river.
