The mysterious region of Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata is where the practices of Buddhism and Shintoism intermix. It is a sacred mountain, where the ascetic practices of the Mikkyo were observed. This is where monks confined themselves to the mountain to pray, to the point of mummifying themselves. Often referred to as the eastern counterpart to the Ise Pilgrimage of west Japan, many visitors come to visit at least once in their life time. This episode introduces the history of the intermixed religions.
