Kuromori Kabuki Theatre in Sakata
EN 100% Japan

In this episode, we introduce the Kuromori Kabuki of Sakata city in Yamagata Prefecture. Around 270 years ago, villagers who loved drama and play brought Kabuki back from Edo to the village. The villagers made a stage called Saido Renchu and staged Kabuki as a regular dedication event to the shrine. The actors work in the day and practice at night as the performing date approaches. It is called “Play in the Snow” because Kabuki is still staged even in the extremely cold and snowing days of February.
