Kanagi-machi, Goshogawara city in Aomori. There is a sacred place that carries our thoughts to the other world. It’s the center for the regional worship of Tsugaru and the worship of Jizo, the guardian deity, along with Osore-zan Mountain. This is Sai no Kawara, the Children’s Limbo, in Kawakura built by a priest Jikaku Daishi Ennin. Most of over 2000 Jizo statues housed in the temple have been dedicated for the souls of deceased small children. Every June of the lunar calendar, the annual Jizo memorial service is held. People visit here from all over the country to pray for the deceased small children. This is the sacred place where the souls of the deceased and the surviving families cross.
