Kamaishi Festival in Iwate Prefecture
EN 100% Japan

The proverb “A tiger can go 4,000 km and return in one day” still remains in the port town of Kamaishi in Iwate. Every fall, in the Kamaishi Festival, sea men perform tiger dance to pray for their safe returns. The tug-boat festival is also held with a group of more than 10 boats cruising in the bay trailing the big-catch banners. On the boats are the tiger dancers and the shrine musicians as well as Mikoshi, portable shrines. On the harbor, people pray toward Mikoshi on the boats. We follow the festival of wishes and prayers for safety of people who live with the sea.
