"Of Human Bondage" (1934) is an American film based on the 1915 novel of the same name by W. Somerset Maugham. It is widely regarded as the film that made Bette Davis famous. The film tells the story of the sensitive, club-footed artist Philip Carey who gives up on his artistic ambitions and tries to become a medical doctor, but he finds it hard to keep up due to his old age and chronic self-doubt. While he's in London for school, he falls in love with a waitress, Mildred Rogers.
