Jung Woo is a popular South Korean actor. Born on January 14, 1981, as Kim Jung Guk, he launched his acting career in 2006 with minor roles in films and television dramas. Jung Woo’s first leading role was the 2009 film “Wish,” which Jung Woo wrote himself based on his own experiences as a troubled youth. The film became an official selection at the 2009 Busan International Film Festival, and Jung Woo won Best New Actor for his role at the Grand Bell Awards in 2010. Jung Woo’s popularity rose after his roles in in the television dramas “You’re the Best, Lee Soon Shin” (2013) and “Reply 1994” (2014).

Gil Je Gal (Jung Woo) is a former member of the South Korean national Taekwondo team. But when he is caught up in a scandal, he is kicked off the team and permanently banned from returning as an athlete. He is reluctant to turn his back on the world of sports, however, so has become a “mental coach” – a kind of sports psychologist who specializes in helping athletes who have fallen into poor form, or “slumps.”

As part of his new line of work, he must help a young woman named Cha Ga Eul (Lee Yoo Mi). This woman is a short-track speed skater who dreams of glory at the Winter Olympic Games. Although she is supremely talented and already has a World Championship gold medal under her belt, she has lost her self-belief and needs motivation. But Gil Je Gal’s task will not be easy: Ku Tae Man (Kwon Yool), another former Taekwondo star and a man whose path has crossed with that of Gil Je Gal in the past, has risen to become the director of the human rights center at the national athletics association. Sparks may fly when they are forced to work together. Meanwhile, the “mental coach” must also work with Park Seung Ha (Park Se Young), an athletes’ counselor who he previously met when he was an athlete. In 1980s South Korea, Lee Eui Shik (Oh Dal Soo) is a popular left-wing politician and potential presidential candidate who returns from spending time abroad to find he has been placed under house arrest.

His political rivals have nothing but trumped-up charges to accuse him of, however, so must urgently come up with something concrete to charge him with – or risk needing to let him go free.

In a desperate move, a government agency assigns a team of poorly performing covert spies to pose as a family and move into the house next door.

Headed by Dae Kwon (Jung Woo) and featuring the clumsy bugging expert Dong Shik (Kim Byung Chul), this team – somehow – successfully manages to plant surveillance devices in Lee Eui Shik’s house.

Finally privy to his conversations with family members and others, they start to get to know more about the real Lee Eui Shik.

However, the more they listen in to his private conversations, the more they realize that Lee Eui Shik is perhaps is not the corrupt villain his political rivals have been so keen to paint him as after all…

Nostalgia again takes center stage in the mid-1990s, when K-pop group Seo Taiji and Boys exploded in popularity and everyone was obsessed with the Korean Basketball League. 

Sung Na Jung (Go Ara) is a polished woman living in modern-day Seoul with her husband and son. But she remembers back to 1994, the year that her parents (Sung Dong Il and Lee Il Hwa) moved from the Gyeongsang Province to the big city of Seoul to operate the Shin Chon Boarding House. That year, when she was 20 years old and crazy about the college basketball star Lee Sang Min, was a turning point in her life. 

Among the other fresh transplants from the countryside living in her parents’ boarding house that year would be her future husband. There’s Trash (Jung Woo), a third-year medical student who has grown up like her older brother; Sam Cheon Po (Kim Sung Kyun), a computer engineering major who feels alienated in Seoul; Haitai (Son Ho Joon), another computer engineering major who plays video games all the time; Bing Grae (Baro), a first-year medical student; and his cousin, Chil Bong (Yoo Yeon Seok), a pitcher on the Yonsei University Baseball Team. Also boarding at the house is the dark female student with the foul mouth, Jo Yoon Jin (Min Dohee).

“Reply 1994” is a follow-up series to the hit 2012 coming-of-age drama “Reply 1997.” It is written by Lee Woo Jung and directed by Shin Won Ho, the same team as the previous series.
