Shamans Lee Hwa Rim (Kim Go Eun) and Yoon Bong Gil (Lee Do Hyun) are hired to help a rich Korean-American family whose firstborn children are plagued by a strange, otherworldly illness. The shamans team up with the geomancer Kim Sang Deok (Choi Min Sik) and the undertaker Ko Young Geun (Yoo Hae Jin) to exhume the bodies from tombs and relocate the remains, but the project takes a dark turn. The year is 1940, and the Korean Peninsula is still under the colonial rule of Imperial Japan.

The Imperial Japanese are on the verge of what will soon be their undoing – their involvement in World War II. But even as the nation prepares for war, the colonial government is doing its utmost in its colony to stamp out the Korean language. Its goal is to promote the Japanese language and culture at all costs.

Against this backdrop, a group of people forms an unlikely alliance. Their aim is to produce a Korean language dictionary – an act of defiance and patriotism that could well see them land in very hot water with the colonial government.

This group is led by an erudite young scholar named Ryu Jeong Hwan (Yoon Kye Sang) and Kim Pan Su (Yoo Hae Jin), an illiterate, middle-aged petty thief.

Together with the rest of the group, the duo attempts to do the unthinkable – complete and publish a vital reference book that could help restore national pride in a language that has been placed under existential threat.

Undeterred by the danger ahead, the two find a more creative way into the city, only to find themselves caught up in the escalating events unfolding around them.

Unintentional participants in the uprising, Man Seob and Peter soon find themselves befriending strangers from all walks of life as they attempt to document the severity of the situation, all while trying to outrun the law. Short on time and running thin on luck, the brave pair must find a way to get home before it’s too late.

Based on a real-life story, “A Taxi Driver” is a 2017 historical action film directed by Jang Hoon.
