Johnny Yen is a Taiwanese singer, actor and model. Born on September 8, 1976, as Yen Hsing Shu, he also was a former professional basketball player and former captain of the Chinese Taipei men’s national basketball team and the 183 Club. His nickname when he played basketball was “The Basketball Genie.” After a series of knee injuries, Johnny Yen ended his basketball career and decided to pursue a career in entertainment. He made his acting debut in the 2007 basketball-themed television drama “My MVP Valentine,” which turned him into an overnight success. He went on to star in the popular dramas “The Champion” (2004), “Snow Angel” (2004), “The Prince Who Turns Into a Frog” (2005) and “Legend of Star Apple” (2006). In 2007, Johnny Yen returned to basketball to play for the Yunnan Bulls in Mainland China in the 2007-2008 season, the Taiwan Beer in Taiwan for the 2008-2009 season, and then the Shanghai Sharks in China for the 2009-2010 season. He has worked as the assistant coach for Brigham Young University-Hawaii and as a sports commentator for FOX Sports Taiwan.
