Kara Hui is a veteran Hong Kong-born actress who made her debut in the 1976 martial arts movie “Challenge of the Masters” (1976). She played the main role in the smash-hit action film “My Young Auntie” (1982) and was handed the Best Actress prize at the inaugural Hong Kong Film Awards. She has since starred in scores of films in both Hong Kong and mainland China, including the 2019 film “My Best Summer.”

In the ancient state of Jing, a young Emperor named Zhen Zhong has just ascended to the throne. But the state has been torn apart by a tumultuous rebellion. But the rebellion has also left the royal court in tatters. All sorts of powerful nobles have their eyes on the throne, and the risk of a coup is higher than ever. Chen Wen De is a military leader who, rumor has it, is a former bandit. His uncouth ways have earned him a bad reputation among the noble ladies. Mo Xi, who is close to Bai Feng Yao, tells her cousin that she will help her avoid the marriage. But interfering with the situation inadvertently lands Mo Xi in Chen Wen De’s path. Will he take a fancy to her instead of her cousin? Could love bloom among the chaos?

Following the accident, Zeng Bao Qin finds herself in the Ren family home and face to face with Shen Cui Xi, her bitterest love rival. But hard times are ahead for the family as enemies circle, and it seems that only a partnership between these two women will help them avoid a painful fall from grace. Can they put their rivalry aside to cooperate – or will jealousy and love stand in their way?

In a compilation of seven short films, seven directors explore the history of modern China and its people, going back to the 1940s and the aftermath of World War II, on the eve of the birth of the People’s Republic of China, through to the 1960s, the 1980s, the 1990s, and finally the 2010s, with stars like Song Jia and Ou Hao making appearances.

The first film focuses on an engineer struggling to organize a ceremony to mark the birth of the nation and the second tells the story of a love-sick nuclear scientist. In the third film, a young boy does what he can to help his neighborhood watch the gold medal match of the women’s volleyball competition in the 1984 Olympic Games.

The remaining films focus on more recent events, including two groups of people preparing for the handover of Hong Kong by the British colonial government in 1997. There is another Olympic story in a film about events surrounding the 2008 Olympics, which were held in Beijing, as a taxi driver decides to gift a ticket he had bought for his own son to another boy.

In the sixth film, two homeless boys watch a spectacular space mission in the 2010s. And in the final film, a female air force pilot attempts to ensure that a military parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War goes off without a hitch

Geng Geng (He Lan Dou) is a socially awkward but warm-hearted girl who is about to start her first year at the exclusive Zhen Hua High School.

She is filled with trepidation, though, and worried that the school will be too much for her to cope with – and fearful that she does not belong there.

But in a stroke of good fortune, she finds herself paired in class with a remarkable deskmate, the popular and smart Yu Huai (Chen Fei Yu).

Although their friendship gets off to a rocky start – with the two arguing about minor trifles – they eventually form a strong bond and become inseparable.

Together, they begin to form firm friendships with their classmates – including some quirky and unusual characters – as well as some very inspiring teachers.

Will Geng Geng and Yu Huai’s friendship survive high school – and could platonic love turn into something more romantic as their relationship deepens.

The movie is based on a novel by Chinese author Ba Yue Chang An. The novel also spawned the 2016 series “With You.”
