Nan Sheng is a Chinese actress. Born on October 23, 1991, she made her acting debut in the 2014 television drama “City of Fantasy.” She has since appeared in a number of popular films and television dramas, including the Chinese drama “Princess Agents” (2017) and the Japanese film “By Chance” (2018).

Qin Yang Ming (Peng Yu Si) is the leader of a mortal kingdom that finds itself in mortal peril. Evil deities and fearsome monsters threaten to destroy the peace of the realm. This movie was based on characters from a short story in a 17th Century Chinese compilation named “Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio” by Pu Song Ling.

A firm believer in an equal balance between good and evil, Ning Cai Chen (Peng Yu Si) has long believed that humans and demons can live in peace. Convinced that, much like humans, there are just as many good demons as there are evil, Cai Chen sees no reason why spirits and humans can’t co-exist in perfect harmony. However, his beliefs are far from popular, especially as rumors of dark forces stirring in the world begin to spread.&nbsp;

Sealed deep within a nearby mountain, one of the spirit realm’s most vile leaders has long slumbered, some believe the time to summon him has finally come. To keep the world from being overwhelmed by the great wave of darkness that would inevitably sweep over the world, should this vile force be awakened, Cai Chen takes it upon himself to journey to the lands bordering the human and spirit realms. The souls and spirits of those waiting for rebirth must be ferried across the Luochuan River by the oracle, Xun Ya (Ma Jia Ming). Once a great god in the heavens, Xun Ya exiled himself to the banks of the Luochuan River and for thousands of years, he has acted as the guardian of the great river which separates the Five Realms. Now a ferriman of souls, Xun Ya is bound to the water and those who seek his help; which is why, when the Green Snake (Nan Shen) was struck by lightning and fell, heart-broken, into the river, Xun Ya summoned his true form, the great dragon, Yuan Shen, to save her.&nbsp;

Thanks to Xun Ya, Green Snake survived the fall, but he could not save her from the cold toxin which settled within, inflicting her with an illness from which she would never fully recover. When a door closes, they say another one opens in its place. Yu Nana (Nan Sheng) is a graduate student who has been pursuing her doctorate in psychology for the past eight years. While all of her college friends have secured jobs or married, Nana has been studying hard and preparing for her thesis. All her hard work seems to have been wasted when her thesis fails again and she is denied her Ph.D., plunging Nana into despair.

The next day, Nana receives a strange email from Sasai Eisuke (Terada Takuya), a Japanese businessman. Eisuke came across her picture on social media, and he wrote to Nana asking her to come to Yufuin, an idyllic small town in Oita Prefecture in Japan famous for its hot springs, to pose for a few photos. Nana is the doppelgänger for Eisuke’s fiancée, who died three years ago, and he has no pictures to remember her by because she hated taking pictures. In exchange for sitting for a few pictures, Eisuke promises to give Nana a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn.

Wanting to escape from her failures, Nana takes the stranger up on his unusual offer and sets off for a trip to Japan that will change her life.

“By Chance” is a 2018 Japanese film that is produced by a Korean production company and directed by Chinese director Liu Defu.
