Chang Chen is a Taiwanese actor. He was born in Taipei, Taiwan on October 14, 1976 and made his debut in the entertainment world in 1980. Since then, he has appeared in countless films, including the international blockbuster, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000). Nominated for, and winning, several awards for best actor over the years he has only recently begun acting in television dramas, his first being the 2019 wuxia drama, “Love and Destiny”.

Shen Lian (Chang Chen) is a soldier who – in a sudden act of bravery on a blood-soaked battlefield – manages to save an Imperial guard named Lu Wen Zhao (Zhang Yi) from impending doom. To thank him, Lu Wen Zhao takes Shen Lian with him to the Imperial capital to become a guardsman. Although the members of the guard are notoriously corrupt, Shen Lian shuns the culture of bribery. He also has a fondness for art, and is particularly keen on the works of a female artist named Bei Zhai (Yang Mi).

However, Bei Zhang has fallen foul of scheming forces at court and has been accused of producing artworks that deride and mock the Emperor. Ironically, Shen Lian is dispatched to find and kill her. But his fondness for her work, and a shocking discovery at a murder scene lead opportunist rebels to frame him for a crime he did not commit. He decides to flee and try to clear his name away from the Imperial court – but the investigations of a quick-witted rival guard make his every move all the more perilous!

During the last years of the Tang Dynasty, a young aristocrat by the name of Nie Yinniang (Shu Qi) was taken from her home by her aunt, the Princess turned Taoist nun, Jia Xin (Fang Yi Sheu), to be trained as an assassin. Studying the ways of the assassin since she was ten, Yinniang has grown into nothing short of a living weapon, one wielded by her aunt to slay the corrupt government officials who would otherwise rule unchecked. But when Yinniang unexpectedly shows mercy to one of her intended targets, her aunt punishes her with a ruthless test of mettle.

Tasked with killing Tian Ji’an (Chang Chen), the military governor of the northern province of Weibo, Yinniang has no choice but to obey. The year is 1627, and China is in the last days of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The young Emperor has decided that he must wipe out the powerful eunuch Wei (Chin Shi Chieh) and do away with his supporters. Three warriors and firm friends, part of a secret order of Imperial Assassins, step up to the challenge. They are the mysterious Lian (Chang Chen), the promotion-chasing Jian Xing (Wang Qian Yuan), and a young man with a troubling medical ailment named Yi Chuan (Li Dong Xue).

But although their assignment to kill the eunuch appears straightforward at first, the further along the trio progresses with their quest, the more they realize that conspiracies abound at every turn. The past is also catching up with them, and the secrets they hide from one another also threaten to complicate matters. The trio all need money for very different reasons: One hopes to raise enough money to bribe an official, another hopes to free his lover from her captors, and the other wants to pay off a blackmailer who is attempting to expose his criminal past. When they receive a tempting counter-offer, however, their plan to kill Wei could hit the rocks!
