Park Hae Il is a South Korean actor born in Seoul, South Korea, on January 26, 1977. He began studying English at Namseoul University but eventually left to pursue a career in acting instead. He appeared in a number of stage plays, including a production of “Ode to Youth” in 2000, for which he won the Best New Actor prize at the Baeksang Arts Awards. The following year, he made his big-screen debut in “Waikiki Brothers.” He then went on to appear in the 2003 movie “Jealosy Is My Middle Name,” for which he won a number of Best New Actor awards. He has since gone on to appear in a number of hit movie titles, including “My Mother, the Mermaid” (2004), “The Host” (2006), and “A Muse” (2012). More recently, he has appeared in “Ode to the Goose” (2018), “High Society” (2018), and “The King’s Letters” (2019).

The year is 1592 and Korea is facing a sea invasion at the hands of the fearsome Japanese navy, who have already made landfall on the Korean peninsula and driven the defending army out of its capital. The Japanese General Wakisaka (Byun Yo Han) is seeking a final, decisive battle that will allow his forces to take total control over the peninsula. The only man who can hope to repel the invaders is the wounded Korean Admiral Yi Sun Shin (Park Hae Il). Wakisaka wants to wipe out Yi’s port and eliminate his foe’s greatest warrior. The stage is set for a battle near the Island of Hansan that will determine the fate of both nations...

But preparations for the fight are not going to plan on either side. Wakisaka has developed a rivalry with the Japanese Admiral Kato (Kim Sung Kyun), while Yi’s forces have begun squabbling among themselves while he tries to develop a plan that will keep the Japanese at bay. With time running out, can Korea’s greatest sea commander pull off an against-the-odds victory against the invading foes?

It is the 15th century. In the kingdom of Joseon, the vast majority of the population is illiterate, and the few people who do know how to read and write must make use of Chinese characters – a writing technique that is notoriously difficult to master.

The aging King Sejong the Great (Song Kang Ho), dreams of sparking an intellectual revolution in his country. His plan is to develop a script so straightforward and easy to read that even peasants could learn to read it.

Spurred on by the quick-witted Queen Sohun (Jeon Mi Sun), Sejong embarks on an ambitious quest to realize his dream – and help his country move out of China’s shadow, with a move he says “would take China 1,000 years to achieve.”

In his desperation, he turns to a group of low-born Buddhist monks led by Shin Mi (Park Hae Il) for help. Shin Mi and his monastic brothers guard the secrets of the Tripitaka Koreana, a massive library of 81,258 wooden printing blocks produced in the 13th century.

Shin Mi’s calligraphy and language skills are second to none, while the king’s drive to complete the project is unswerving. But many obstacles stand between them and what seems at times like an impossible dream.

Can King Sejong and his unlikely cohort of pious linguists help create a script that will ultimately become Hangeul, the modern Korean alphabet?

Choi Hyun (Park Hae Il) is a South Korean university professor who lives in Beijing with his Chinese wife.

He is outwardly content with his life in China but takes an unconventional trip down memory lane when a childhood friend dies.

He returns to South Korea to attend the funeral and then takes a side trip to the city of Gyeongju, once a favorite haunt for him and his friends.

He decides to visit a café where he remembers he once saw an erotic piece of artwork when he visited with friends many years ago. However, he soon discovers that the café has since changed ownership and its new owner Yoon Hee (Shin Min Ah) has wallpapered over the picture.

He strikes up an unconventional friendship with Yoon Hee – and things get even more complicated when former college flame Yeo Jung (Yoon Jin Seo) comes to pay him a visit.

“Gyeongju” is a 2014 South Korean movie directed by Zhang Lu.
