Born in Seoul, South Korea, on December 14, 1982, Koo is a South Korean actor and movie director. He began acting in the mid-2000s and in 2009 made an appearance in the hit movie “Castaway on the Moon.” He has since appeared in the movies “Jane” (2016), “Peninsula” (2020), and “Escape from Mogadishu.” As a director, he released the short films “After School” (2015) and “Girls on Top” (2017).

Koo Kyo Hwan

Sergeant Lim Kyu Nam (Lee Je Hoon), a North Korean soldier stationed near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), is about to be discharged after 10 years of service. However, he has become disillusioned with the Northern regime and is planning to defect to South Korea. Private Kim Dong Hyuk (Hong Xa Bin), a lower ranking soldier in the same unit, discovers Kyu Nam's intentions – and decides to stage an escape of his own. Unfortunately, Major Ri Hyun Sang (Koo Kyo Hwa) of the State Security Department is sent to their unit to investigate rumors of deserters and uncovers their plot. Because he knew Kyu Nam as a child, he covers up the incident by framing Kyu Nam as a hero who thwarted a defection. But Kyu Nam still dreams of leaving, and tries to defect once again. One Day Off

The year is 1991 and in Mogadishu, the Somalian capital, a group of South Korean diplomats including Ambassador Han Shin Sung (Kim Yun Seok) and the intelligence agent Kang Dae Jin (Jo In Sung), are trying to win the support of Somalia’s government in an upcoming vote for membership of the United Nations. Their efforts are being closely shadowed by diplomats from North Korea’s embassy in Mogadishu, headed by Ambassador Rim Yong Su (Heo Joon Ho). Both groups of diplomats try to outwit one another as they try to curry favor from the Somalian President.

But when protests against the Mogadishu government turn violent, a brutal civil war breaks out, with street fighting and armed militia soldiers running amok. The maelstrom threatens to engulf both groups of diplomats, cutting them off from communication channels in Seoul and Pyongyang. In desperation, Rim Yong Su comes to his South Korean counterpart to ask for refuge. Saying yes would normally be seen as an act of treason for Han Shin Sung – but these circumstances are anything but normal for both parties…
