Middle-aged salaryman Ichiro Inuyashiki lives a quiet, lonely life, shunned by both his family and coworkers. In an alternate reality, two teenage boys “Nine” and “Twelve” – survivors of a secret experiment intended to turn orphaned children with savant syndrome into human weapons – steal a prototype atomic bomb in an apparent terrorist attack. Calling themselves "Sphinx," they upload a video onto the Internet and threaten to destroy Tokyo unless a cryptic riddle can be solved. As Nine and Twelve vow to expose the organization behind their situation, they befriend Lisa, a lonely high school girl, who ends up getting caught in their plans to reveal the truth.
