Yoon Hee (Kim Hee Ae) is a woman in her forties who has recently divorced her husband. She is depressed, but hides her sadness from her teenage, high schooler daughter Sae Bom (Kim So Hye). One day, Sae Bom finds a letter addressed to her mother from a small town in a rural part of Japan. She accidentally ends up reading it, and is surprised to see that it contains details about her mother’s first love, a secret love that she has never spoken of to anyone. Intent on lifting her mother out of her gloom, Sae Bom devises a plan. She convinces her mother to travel together to Japan – without revealing her true intentions: to search for the older woman’s first love. What follows for mother and daughter is a journey of discovery. Although Yoon Hee would not dare to admit it, she is secretly hopeful (and somewhat anxious) about the prospect of a reunion with her first love. But could the journey also help her form a tighter bond with her precious daughter? “Moonlit Winter” is a 2019 South Korean movie that was directed by Lim Dae Hyung.
