Quyen (Ninh Duong Lan Ngoc) is the gossip queen of Vietnamese TV. Her hit TV talk show “Showbiz Face-off,” where she is known as Ms. Q, is wildly popular, but specializes in spreading rumors and sowing the seeds of scandal – a fact that often sees her guests throw fits of rage live on television as she exposes their secrets. She has also been dating her boyfriend Jack (Le Xuan Tien) for a year. Then one day, over dinner, Jack decides to pop the big question, and Quyen says “yes.” But before they tie the knot, Jack wants her to meet his mother, the former A-listing actress Thai Tuyet Mai (Le Khanh). The latter is a former A-listing screen star, but went into hiding in the idyllic resort of Hue many years ago. When she arrives, she discovers that Jack’s family is fabulously wealthy and of noble origin, and that Jack is the sole heir to the family fortunes. Thai Tuyet Mai takes an immediate disliking to Quyen, thinking her unworthy of her son, and tries to push him into marrying a high-born childhood friend instead. Jack, however, is unwilling to give up on his love for Quyen, and his grandmother surprisingly takes the younger woman’s side. But who will win the ultimate battle – mother or lover? “The Royal Bride” is a 2020 Vietnamese movie that was directed by Nam Cito, Bao Nhan, and Nhat Anh.
