Working hard to hone her skill, Ping’s dedication eventually elevates her to the position of the team’s star player. With the entire world watching, Ping leads the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team through a series of wins that culminates in a showdown between China and Japan in the 1981 World Cup. More than two decades later, Lang Ping (Gong Li) has gone from China’s star player to head coach of Team USA’s women’s volleyball team. Fully aware that her return to Beijing will bring her face to face with her oldest friend and current head coach of the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team, Zhong He (Huang Bo), Ping holds nothing back. After a bittersweet match at the 2008 Olympics, Ping is offered a position as the head coach of her old team.
