The Highway Family

Ki Woo (Jung Il Woo) and Ji Sook (Kim Seul Gi) are a homeless couple who live on the road with their two young children. To make matters worse, Ji Sook is pregnant and the children have never even learned to read or write. They live in a tent that they pitch near highway rest areas. And they make a tiny amount of money by approaching drivers who have stopped in the rest areas and telling them that they have left their wallets at home and have run out of gas. Ki Woo asks drivers to give them their account numbers, and that he will reimburse them when he gets back home. One day, they manage to convince a woman named Young Sun (Ra Mi Ran) to give them money as she makes her way to her son’s grave. She and her husband Do Hwan (Bek Hyunjin) have been in mourning since their child’s untimely death. One day, Young Sun pulls into another highway rest area and sees Ki Woo pulling the same stunt with another driver. Outraged, she calls the police, who promptly arrest him. But Ji Sook and the children refuse to leave Ki Woo’s side, and follow him to the police station where he is detained. When Young Sun sees this pitiful group sitting outside the police station, she starts to feel pity for the family. Can she right this situation – and help heal her own wounds? “The Highway Family” is a 2022 movie that was directed by Lee Sang Moon.
