Hong Gil Dong (Yun Kyun Sang) was born as the son of a slave, making him an outcast in Joseon society. As he grows older, Gil Dong develops superhuman strength, but despite his abilities, he faces a life without legal standing. Forced into a path outside the law, Gil Dong becomes the leader of a band of thieves, initially seeking personal gain. However, their purpose evolves as they witness the tyrannical rule of King Yeonsan (Kim Ji Seok). Gil Dong decides to become a revolutionary who steals from the corrupt rich and challenges the oppressive establishment, helping give a voice to the common people. This drama was inspired by the Korean folktale of Hong Gil Dong.
